What does it take to turn a promising idea into a startup that customers actually need? And how does research move beyond a laboratory to become a product with real-world value?

SIN Official Podcast has recorded a conversation with Gaurav Parulkar, CEO of the Technology Innovation and Start-up Center (TISC), IIT Jodhpur, exploring the questions that matter to aspiring entrepreneurs, student innovators and research-led founders.

The full episode is coming soon on YouTube. Here is a first look at the conversation’s themes, along with photographs from our visit and official resources for connecting with TISC.

The host and the team behind the conversation

The episode is hosted by Er. Harshvardhan Purohit, Founder and CEO of SIN Technologies. The conversation focuses on questions that students, first-time founders and research-led entrepreneurs face when turning an idea into a business.

Meet our guest: Gaurav Parulkar, CEO of TISC, IIT Jodhpur

IIT Jodhpur’s official TISC team page lists Gaurav Parulkar as CEO. His work at TISC connects startup incubation with research commercialisation and the wider entrepreneurship ecosystem.

TISC’s official website describes support spanning technical mentorship, prototyping facilities, business guidance, investor connections and incubation. That makes this conversation relevant to founders asking how to move from an early concept towards a viable venture.

From startup ideas to sustainable businesses

“India mein startup shuru karna aasaan hai—lekin successful banana itna mushkil kyun?”

Our opening theme is the gap between having an idea and building a business. The episode explores the mistakes first-time founders need to recognise, and why understanding a customer’s problem deserves as much attention as developing the solution.

A second question cuts through a familiar buzzword: does every AI startup qualify as deep-tech? We explore how founders can think more clearly about the difference between using technology and creating research-led technological innovation.

Funding, paying customers and the long R&D journey

“Funding milna success hai—ya paying customer milna?”

The discussion brings together three connected questions: what evidence a founder should prepare before seeking investment, when bootstrapping makes sense, and when external capital can support the next stage of development.

For research-intensive ventures, the challenge is especially practical. A product may take years to develop. Our questions examine how founders can approach funding, team continuity and customer validation during that long R&D phase.

Taking research from the laboratory to the market

A research paper or patent can be an important milestone, but the journey to a commercial product raises a different set of questions. Who needs the technology? What must a prototype demonstrate? And what would make an organisation willing to adopt it?

The episode explores research commercialisation in an Indian context, including the steps between an invention and a product that solves a market problem.

We also raise a question many student innovators overlook: if an invention is developed in college, who owns the intellectual property? The conversation’s focus includes the ownership and licensing questions founders should clarify before building a research-based company.

Incubation and opportunities beyond the metro cities

Government support and incubators can be difficult for a first-time founder to navigate. We ask how startups can identify relevant support, approach applications and understand what an incubator can offer at their particular stage.

Another central theme is opportunity for founders in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities: how can someone without an IIT background or an established investor network build credibility, access research expertise and find a first customer?

For our audience in Jodhpur and across Rajasthan, these are immediate questions. The episode connects the ambition to build locally with the practical work of developing a venture that can serve a wider market.

The first 90 days: a question every new founder should ask

If Gaurav Sir were starting a deep-tech venture from zero today, what would he do in the first 90 days?

This closing question brings the episode’s themes together: selecting a problem, developing a prototype and learning from potential customers. Watch the full conversation when it releases for his perspective on that early journey.
